CORDAVIOUS HANKINS-IDABEL
If you wanted to put a definition of the phrase “all-around athlete” in the dictionary there would surely have to be a picture of Idabel’s Cordavious Hankins to go with it. He’s a two-time track champ in the 400 meter and was part of the Warrior’s 4X100 and 4X200 meter gold medal winning relays last year. He also plays football and basketball which we’ll touch on later but back to track as Cordavious talked about last spring’s successes.
“When we were getting ready to run the 4X100, all the guys came together and talked about the opposition which we knew pretty well, and we pushed each other to do our job, and we won. We were going for a relay sweep in the 4X400,but as I was running anchor, the guy beside me fell down and they disqualified us so that’s something we want to change this year.”
Hankins also does the long jump where he finished second at state last year and he credits assistant track coach Devon Sanders for helping him in the offseason with his running and long jump,
“He develops these workouts for us to do during the summer and we’ll run maybe six 200-meter races and two 400-meter races each day and then he videos me on my long jumps to help look for ways to improve,” said Cordavious.
VYPE spoke to Hankins last fall, and he wasn’t sure if he was going to play football or not, but he did, and it turned out pretty well.
“The team voted that they wanted me to play and so I did. We went to the state quarterfinals, and I ended up getting a football scholarship to Langston next year, “he smiled.
And in basketball, Cordavious joined the 1000-point career club this past season. So it’s been a pretty good year for him, but he says there’s still some unfinished business this spring.
“This year I want to see the whole team do well and take the team title and not just gold in some individual events. I also want to repeat in my running events and win the long jump this year.”
