Idabel’s Davion Byrd
Davion Byrd knows good things do not happen overnight.
The Idabel High School senior competes in football, powerlifting and baseball, and through each sport he has learned patience. Growth takes time, something Byrd said has become one of the most important lessons in his life.
“Results aren’t instant. Progress takes time,” Byrd said.
That lesson has changed the way he handles challenges. Instead of expecting immediate success, Byrd has learned to trust the work, stay disciplined and keep moving forward, even when progress feels slow or difficult to see.
One of his favorite sports memories came in a clutch baseball moment. With the game on the line, Byrd came through with a line drive over the third baseman’s head, driving in the winning run. It was the kind of play athletes dream about, and for Byrd, it was a reminder that preparation matters and confidence can make all the difference in big moments.
Byrd credits many people for helping him along the way, including teachers, coaches and teammates who have challenged him to be better.
Mr. Kent stands out as one of the most influential teachers in his education.
“He is one of those new-age teachers who wants you to succeed and do great things in life,” Byrd said.
His teammate and classmate, Jordyn Lewis, has also made a strong impact. Byrd said Lewis pushes him daily to build habits that will matter long after high school.
Their competitive mindset and shared accountability have helped Byrd stay focused on becoming the best version of himself while preparing for life beyond graduation.
Some of Byrd’s favorite moments are not always during games. In his hometown, he enjoys spending time at the football field with friends and teammates, going over the playbook, talking about the game and preparing for what comes next.
He is also involved in JOM and Special Olympics, staying active in programs that keep him connected to his school and community.
The advice Byrd carries with him is simple.
“Nothing is given to you,” he said. “If you want it, you have to go chase it and get it done.”
It continues to shape the way he approaches every challenge.
