The Idabel boys track team enters the 2025 season with momentum and a drive to compete at the highest level. Coming off a year where only seven athletes qualified for state yet still managed to win championships in the 4×100 and 4×200 relays, the team now faces a new challenge—competing in Class 4A. Head coach John Harjo knows his athletes are ready. “We will be in 4A this season,” Harjo said. “But I believe our guys are prepared to make the jump and continue our success.”
At the core of the team are three standout seniors: Quinton Zirretta, Ravian Larry, and Cordavious Hankins. They were instrumental in last year’s relay dominance and bring versatility to the squad. “Quinton, Ravian, and Cordavious are the anchors of the track team,” Harjo said. “Not literally, figuratively. Last year, Lamarian Carter was our anchor, and now these three guys are the heart of the 4×100 and 4×200 state championship teams.” Their leadership and experience will be critical as Idabel looks to build on its tradition.
One of the younger athletes to watch this season is sophomore Cassidy Pondexter, who stepped up as an alternate last year and seamlessly fit into the relay teams. “Cassidy is a great young man who works hard,” Harjo said. “Last season, he was an alternate on the 4×100 and 4×200 relays and had to step in a couple of times. We never skipped a beat on those relays and won all of them.” With another year of training, he could make an even greater impact.
Another key contributor is Mackylan Dixon, a former baseball player who transitioned to track and played a crucial role in last year’s success. “Mackylan was an unsung hero last season,” Harjo said. “He filled in on the 4×100 and 4×200, and we won every race even with two subs on the relays.” His willingness to step up and perform under pressure makes him a valuable asset.
With a mix of proven champions and rising talent, Idabel’s track team is determined to leave its mark in Class 4A. The competition may be tougher, but under Coach Harjo’s leadership, the Warriors are ready for the challenge.
