The Haworth Lions cheerleading squad is gearing up for an exciting season, led by six exceptional senior leaders. Coach Terah Wright provides us with insights into their dedication, progress, and aspirations for the upcoming football and basketball seasons.
This season, the Haworth cheer squad boasts six standout senior leaders, each with exceptional leadership skills and a deep passion for their sport. Alivia Wright, Acskret Burris, Lety Howard, Lexie Clawson, Haylei Cox, and Alissa Pond have collectively cheered for seven years, including their middle school years.
The squad’s summer focus was on elevating their stunting skills. “The goal this summer for Haworth Cheerleading was to raise the bar in the area of stunts!” Wright said. “We have worked since May on one-legged stunts such as the Liberty and the Arabesque, along with Full downs from the one-legged stunts and baskets.”
Haworth cheerleaders never take a break. They are continually preparing for competitions, including the OSSAA Competitive and Game Day Competitions.
The squad’s primary goal is to maintain a top-five position in the OSSAA competitions. Wright emphasizes the importance of consistency, noting their recent 4th place finish in the OSSAA Competitive Cheer Competition.
The Haworth cheerleaders are eagerly anticipating the OSSAA Game Day competition in November, where they shine brightest. Wright highlights their impressive track record, including a State Runner-up finish in 2021 and a 3rd place finish in 2022.
Beyond cheerleading skills, Wright’s approach focuses on building character and life skills. “If I have a GREAT team of athletes but am not building and developing successful young adults with a good mindset for life, then I have failed as a coach,” she emphasizes.
With a brand new and young squad this year, Wright acknowledges the challenge. However, she celebrates their positive culture, diverse backgrounds and mutual respect and love for one another.
Wright’s advice to aspiring cheerleaders is simple but profound: “Don’t ever be afraid to put yourself out there. If you are passionate about something, go all in. Set goals big and small and just go for it.”
As the Haworth Lions cheer squad embarks on another exciting season, they carry the wisdom of their dedicated coach, Terah Wright, and a legacy of excellence.
