Broken Bow’s Greydon Howell – Track Spotlight – Presented by James Hodge Dodge of Broken Bow

From a young age, Greydon Howell found a love for competition on the track. The thrill of racing and winning blue ribbons in elementary school set the foundation for what would become a standout athletic career. “Our elementary track meets were always the best days of the year when I was little,” Howell recalled. “Coming home with blue ribbons was the biggest flex, so it’s always been a part of me.” Now, as a senior at Broken Bow, that same drive fuels his success across multiple sports.

Juggling football, basketball, baseball, and track takes discipline, and Howell has learned how to manage the physical and mental demands of it all. “The one thing I really have to do is take care of my body,” he said. “In between seasons, I will take a week off to not only get my physical body right but also my mental, dealing with the difference of sports.” His training schedule is packed, often requiring him to shift from one sport to another in the same day. “I start from 3:40 and work on either 500s or our relay stuff, but if it’s a day after a meet, I just jog in grass to get my legs back under me,” he explained. “From around 4:45, maybe 5, I leave track to go practice baseball.”

Howell’s dedication has led to impressive results, including a strong showing at the 2024 OSSAA State Track and Field Championship, where he medaled in both the 200 and 400 meters. “It felt good because not only do a lot of freshmen not medal at all during state, but it’s very rare for a freshman to medal for two events,” he said. However, finishing second in the 400 still left him hungry for more. “I would definitely say 2nd at state in the 400 because it was my fastest time the whole year, so I can handle getting second because I know I pushed myself to the absolute most.”

Looking ahead, Howell has clear goals. “The biggest goal I have is winning the 400,” he said. “Because in my opinion, besides the mile relay, that is the best race of the track meet.” With his relentless work ethic, there’s no doubt he’ll be chasing that top spot.
