Samuel Hurst, the starting point guard for the Broken Bow Savages basketball team, reflects on the diverse journey of his high school athletic career— years marked by impactful coaching, unwavering support from teammates, and memorable moments on both the football field and the basketball court.
Among the many coaches who have left a mark on Samuel, one stands out— coach Luke Ring, the football offensive coordinator. “He always challenged me to get better, integrated me into the offense, and even helped when my truck was having problems,” Samuel acknowledged. The fiery halftime speeches and unpredictable days became threads woven into the fabric of Samuel’s sports experience.

Teammate Adin Coley emerges as a figure of admiration and support. A companion since their Lukfata years, Adin’s quiet demeanor belies the impact of his game on the field. “He has supported me in deciding to play football, always being encouraging and believing in me,” Samuel noted.
As Samuel gears up for the upcoming seasons, he emphasizes the importance of consistent preparation. “Showing up for every workout and practice, on time and ready to go” became a cornerstone of his offseason routine. The weight room, a crucible of physical preparation, takes on significance in readying himself for the challenges ahead.
In the world of sports, Samuel gleans life lessons, chief among them the art of resilience: “Sports have taught me to quickly move on when you mess up. Learn from it, move past it and stay confident.”
Looking forward, Samuel sets his sights on both individual and team goals for the basketball season. “I look forward to making it to the Area tournament and beyond. We have a very talented team and should have a great season.”
As matchups loom on the horizon, the anticipation for a game against Madill carries a touch of rivalry and redemption. “They dunked it on us when the game was clearly won, and it has left us all ready to get our revenge,” Samuel revealed, showcasing the competitive fire that fuels the team’s drive.
Post-high school aspirations lead Samuel to Oklahoma State University, where he plans to join the engineering program.
