Baseball isn’t just a sport for Cameron Jones—it’s a way of life shaped by the people closest to him. “My brother Brayden inspired me to play,” Jones said. “Watching him enjoy the game of baseball made me want to play too.” From a young age, he admired his brother’s dedication, and now as a sophomore at Valliant High School, he’s carving out his own path on the diamond.
Beyond just inspiring him to start, Brayden continues to be a guiding force in Jones’ development. “One of my biggest influences is also my brother, both on and off the field, helping me practice and motivating me to work harder.”
One of the things that makes playing at Valliant special for Jones is the deep-rooted chemistry within the team. “Almost everyone on our team has been playing baseball together since we were young,” he said. “We think a lot alike; we have our struggles, but at the end of the day, we figure it out by practicing or team bonding.”
A versatile athlete, Jones embraces his role as a utility player. “My biggest role is being a utility player,” he said. “I prepare by working on my fieldwork.” His preparation is thorough and structured, ensuring he’s always ready to contribute. “A week of training for me is: On Monday, I start off with a 30 to 40 pitch bullpen, then at the end of my bullpen, I do arm care. On Tuesday, I hit off the pitching machine and hit off someone throwing underhand. On Wednesday, I take off and go to church. On Thursday, I work out, then do my stretches. On Friday, I throw another bullpen, throwing 45 to 55 pitches, then finish with arm care. On Saturday, I’ll rest. On Sunday, I practice pitching, hitting, and do my arm care.”
With big goals ahead, Jones remains focused. “My goal for this season is to make it to state for the second time in school history. The first time Valliant made it to state was my dad’s senior year. I would also like to keep improving as a player and hopefully catch the attention of some college baseball coaches to get recruited.”
