Battiest’s Blaklie Charlton – Softball Spotlight – Presented by McCurtain County National Bank

Blaklie Charlton stands out not only for her skill on the softball field but for her unwavering dedication and love for the game. A sophomore at Battiest High School, Blaklie serves as a pitcher and utility player, positions that demand versatility, focus, and resilience. “Simply, for the love of the game,” she said when asked what motivates her, a testament to her deep passion for the sport.

Blaklie’s role models, Simone Biles and Jordy Bahl, have left a lasting impression on her. “When Simone got the twisties at the Olympics and decided to withdraw herself… it helped me realize that they didn’t do it to be people pleasers, they did it to better themselves,” Blaklie explained. Her admiration for Biles and Bahl goes beyond their athleticism—she respects their strength in prioritizing their well-being while continuing to excel.

Her coach, J.P. Sonnier, also imparted wisdom that Blaklie carries with her every game: “If you cheat yourself, you’re cheating your team.” This quote drives her to push herself, not just for personal growth, but for the good of her team. “Softball isn’t a selfish sport, it’s a selfless one,” she added.

Memorable teachers have also left a lasting impact on Blaklie: Mrs. Sheena Estep has had the biggest impact in my life. She has helped me stay positive and look at the bigger picture, even when I couldn’t find a reason to. In my darkest times, she has taught me to be a light to my teammates and build them up, rather than tear them down. She has taught me to work with my teammates, rather than against them, and to love rather than hate!”

One of her proudest moments came in 2024 when she was a National USSSA 14u Fastpitch Softball Finalist in Branson, Missouri. It was a highlight that underscored the countless hours she has spent honing her skills. “It has taken many long hours spent hitting in the cages and with my pitching coach on the field until I felt like my arm would fall off,” Blaklie shared.

Beyond softball, Blaklie is involved in FCA and hopes to pursue a college softball scholarship, with culinary classes in her plans. Representing her school and community is a great honor for her. “I hope that people see good in me, and I can only pray that I’m an asset to my team,” she said, fully embracing her role both on and off the field.
