Wright City’s Violet Christie-Athlete Spotlight-Presented by Weyerhaeuser

Wright City freshman Violet Christie stays busy throughout the year, moving from cross country to basketball, softball and track. No matter the season, she approaches competition with the same priorities: work hard, finish strong and keep her faith at the center of what she does.
Of everything Christie has experienced, one personal milestone stands above her athletic accomplishments.
“I am most proud of being baptized and living a Christian life,” Christie said. “I am also proud of being in runs and getting a medal.”
Each of her sports has taught her something different. Softball has shown Christie how important it is to recover from a mistake and focus on the next play. Distance running has taught her to give her best effort through the finish line, while basketball has reinforced the importance of hustle and refusing to give up.
Running also gives Christie an opportunity to compete alongside her sister, Poppy Christie. The sisters have developed a friendly rivalry that pushes both to improve.
“Every race we try to be the first one to come in,” Christie said. “She has taught me never give up and keep on working on getting faster.”
Christie credits several coaches and teachers with helping her develop, particularly Mr. McCary, who coached her in basketball and continues to help Wright City’s cross country and track teams. She is also thankful for Mr. Crabtree and the many others who have invested time in helping her grow as an athlete.
Away from competition, family remains an important part of Christie’s life. She has seven siblings and enjoys spending time with them, helping care for them and assisting with their show animals. She is also involved with her church’s youth department and Wisdom Club.
Christie is proud of her Choctaw heritage and has enjoyed opportunities to learn more about her culture, including running for princess and attending the annual Labor Day Festival with her family.
As Christie begins her high school career, the foundation behind everything she hopes to accomplish remains her faith.
“I want to thank God for the ability to play sports and be a runner,” Christie said. “He has given me the talent to continue on my journey as a runner and do other sports.”
