KENNEDEE BRITTAIN-BROKEN BOW
Although she plays softball and is a three-time state champion powerlifter, throwing the shot put and discus are what Broken Bow senior Kennedee Brittain enjoys the most.
“I like how it’s just me performing but also knowing that I’m earning some points for the team as well. I started throwing in middle school when some of my friends were in track and by eighth grade, I fell in love with it and was doing pretty well at meets.”
She was doing so well that by her freshman year she won the state title in the shot put. She qualified for state her sophomore year and was on the podium last year for both the shot and discus.
“Coach Lee got me into powerlifting my sophomore year since I was already doing some lifting for track and after I tied for first in my first meet, I was hooked. I’ve won state three times and this year I set a record for my weight class by bench pressing 215 pounds. At first some of my family wasn’t too keen on me powerlifting but after they saw how much I liked it they came around and now they’re my cheering section at every meet.”
As a senior leader this year, Kennedee helps with practice especially early in the season when some of the coaches were still busy with powerlifting by helping some of the younger girls with their form and technique. In addition to track and powerlifting, Kennedee is also in student council and FFA where she shoots skeet.
With the track season underway, Kennedee has some specific goals she would like to accomplish in her final year at Broken Bow.
“This year I want to throw the shot at least 40 feet and maybe add another championship ring and I want to throw the discus 125-130 feet and be on the podium again.”
Kennedee will attend Ouachita Baptist on a track scholarship next year and study communication science disorders to become a speech pathologist.
