How do you build a great academic team? For Broken Bow High School’s head coach Rebekah Clowers, it starts with a group of students who are passionate about learning—and willing to grow together. “My team is full of potential,” Clowers said. “They are always trying to learn and improve, while taking ‘wins’ and ‘losses’ with humility and sportsmanship.”
This year’s team may be young, but they’ve already started making a name for themselves in quiz bowl competitions. “They are a relatively young team, but I believe they are going to go on to do great things,” Clowers said. “I am so proud of my team.”
At the heart of the team’s success is junior Kruse Ward, a well-rounded leader and standout on the team. “Kruse is an all-around good player and good person,” Clowers said. “He has a pretty good understanding of a lot of different subjects, making him a tough competitor.” But what sets him apart isn’t just his knowledge. “What really makes Kruse stand out, though, is his attitude and sportsmanship,” Clowers said. “He is supportive of his teammates and opponents, always looking for ways to encourage, support, and help others achieve their goals.”
While Kruse leads with experience, freshman Blake Whitfield is making a big impact early in his academic team career. “Blake is only a freshman, but he is already a starting player on the team,” said Clowers. “He is a history buff, especially when it comes to World War II. He plays with a competitive spirit, but is always ready to help and support the team.”
Another key presence on the team is Ty Martin, Broken Bow’s “Character Counts” representative. “Ty always has a positive attitude,” Clowers shared. “It doesn’t matter what the situation is, how bad the score is, or how many games we’ve lost—Ty is always cheerful and ready to encourage those around him.”
The team is also strengthened by strong parental support, especially from Glena Ward. “She shows up to every competition and most practices,” said Clowers. “She doesn’t just come to support her son, she comes to support the entire team. She cares for all of us, and that is a truly special thing.”
With a foundation of encouragement, talent, and heart, Broken Bow’s academic team is on the rise.
