Idabel’s Adelynn Clardy-Athlete Spotlight-Presented by JD Farms

Idabel sophomore Adelynn Clardy has learned that life behind the plate requires more than toughness. It also requires trust — in herself, in the pitcher in front of her and in the teammates surrounding her.

As Idabel’s catcher, Clardy handles a position that demands her attention on every pitch. Of all the responsibilities that come with the job, one stands out as the toughest.

“I am a catcher, and blocking is definitely the hardest and worst thing about it,” Clardy said.

The challenges of softball have also taught Clardy lessons that extend beyond what happens behind the plate. One of the biggest is understanding how quickly one person’s attitude can affect an entire team.

“[I’ve learned] to work together as a team, and that if one is down, everyone is down, so there’s no point in not building them back up,” Clardy said.

That mindset is also what she appreciates about her Idabel teammates. Mistakes and difficult moments are inevitable, but Clardy values playing alongside people who refuse to let one another stay discouraged.

“None of us gets down, and we all build each other back up,” Clardy said. “Definitely the people I am around. They help make it so much better.”

Clardy finds another example of perseverance at home. Her mother has become one of her biggest inspirations because of the way she works and handles the responsibilities in front of her.

“One of my biggest inspirations is my mom,” Clardy said. “She is the hardest worker I know, and she handles things so easily.”

She also brings some humor to the game. Asked about her favorite unwritten softball rule, Clardy pointed to the familiar relationship between players and umpires.

“No matter what happens, the umps are always wrong until it’s for you,” Clardy said.

Clardy’s involvement at Idabel extends beyond softball. She serves as vice president of FFA and enjoys AP Seminar. Away from school and athletics, she likes reading, watching movies and taking time for self-care. Taco Alley is also among her favorite places in Idabel.

Still only a sophomore, Clardy is continuing to grow into the responsibilities that come with being a catcher. More importantly, she is learning what kind of teammate she wants to be — one who works hard, stays resilient and helps the people around her get back up when the game knocks them down.
