Some of Emerson McElroy’s best memories at Idabel High School have come from being part of something bigger than herself.
Whether she is cheering on the sidelines or competing on the golf course, the Idabel senior has learned that being a teammate comes with a responsibility to the people beside her.
“Cheer and golf have taught me that it is important to always do my best, not only for myself but also for my team,” McElroy said. “Being part of a team means that others are counting on me to give my best effort and do my part.”
McElroy is a member and co-captain of the Idabel varsity cheer squad and also competes in golf. One of her favorite memories came during her freshman year, when Idabel advanced to state in the OSSAA Game Day competition in the program’s first year competing.
“It was really special to see all of our hard work pay off,” McElroy said.
The people McElroy has met along the way have been just as important as the accomplishments.
She credits teacher and golf coach Madelyn Bushers with becoming someone she can turn to for advice and support. McElroy had Bushers for physical science in eighth grade and anatomy and physiology in 11th grade. Now, she serves as Bushers’ teacher’s aide.
“She is the type of teacher who cares about her job and her students,” McElroy said.
McElroy also grew up looking up to Kaelin Clay, who went from being her babysitter to someone she considers almost a sister. Clay’s involvement as a cheerleader, Miss IHS and an anchor for the Warrior Nation Newscast inspired McElroy to pursue many of those same opportunities.
Former teammate Brinlee Snider Lindly also left a lasting impression. As a senior during McElroy’s freshman year, Lindly made a point to include her, from asking about her day to sitting with her on bus rides.
“She showed me how important it is to make others feel included,” McElroy said.
Those relationships have reinforced advice McElroy carries with her: “Choose your friends wisely.”
As her senior year continues, McElroy is thankful for the family, friends, teachers and coaches who have supported her and helped make her Idabel experience one she will carry with her long after graduation.
