Valliant’s Gavin Chavez – Athlete Spotlight – Presented by Pine Cellular

Valliant’s Gavin Chavez

Valliant junior Gavin Chavez has learned that growth in sports is not always measured by numbers on a scoreboard or weight on a barbell. Sometimes, it shows up in the way an athlete handles pressure, responds to challenges and carries himself in everyday life.

Chavez competes in football, powerlifting and track, giving him year-round opportunities to push himself physically and mentally. Among his proudest memories is helping Valliant’s football team achieve something no team in school history had done before — finishing the regular season 9-0.

“That was a huge accomplishment for our team,” Chavez said. “Being part of something that had never been done before meant a lot.”

Success on the field has been meaningful, but Chavez said sports have shaped him in ways that extend far beyond competition. One of the biggest lessons he has learned is the value of patience and self-control.

“Sports have taught me to be calmer and more patient,” Chavez said. “That helps me in everyday life because I’ve learned not everything happens instantly, and sometimes you have to trust the process.”

Chavez also credits teammate Ryder Evans for pushing him to improve. Because the two share similar builds, their competitive drive naturally pushes each of them to work harder.

“We push each other no matter what the task is,” Chavez said.

Much of what Chavez values about athletics comes from the relationships built along the way. The friendships and memories created through sports have become some of his favorite parts of high school.

Away from practice and competition, Chavez enjoys spending time with teammates at Loli and Pops, a local favorite where they often gather after summer workouts.

One quote continues to guide his mindset: “The best way to predict the future is to create it.” Chavez said those words remind him that success requires intentional effort.

“It helps me remember that I have to work as hard as I can to become the best version of myself,” he said.

Above all, Chavez credits his family — his father, mother, step-mother and two younger brothers — for their constant support, saying their love has helped shape the person he is becoming.
