Valliant’s John McKinney
Friday nights on Valliant’s football field mean something special to John McKinney. The stadium represents more than competition. It connects him to family, community and a tradition he hopes to carry forward as he begins his high school career.
Now entering ninth grade at Valliant High School, McKinney already brings an impressive athletic résumé. A five-sport athlete competing in football, baseball, basketball, powerlifting and track, he has built a reputation through discipline, consistency and a strong work ethic.
His proudest athletic accomplishment came in powerlifting, where he became a two-time state champion during middle school, winning state titles in sixth and eighth grade. He also earned three regional championships and finished as runner-up once, establishing himself as one of the top young lifters in the state.
Despite those accomplishments, McKinney says the biggest lessons sports have taught him go far beyond medals and trophies.
“One of the most important lessons my sport has taught me is the importance of hard work and giving my best effort every day,” McKinney said. “Success doesn’t come easily, and reaching goals takes dedication, practice and determination.”
Sports have also helped shape his confidence and mindset. McKinney said competition has taught him how to stay positive, work through challenges and keep moving forward when things become difficult.
The people around him have played a major role in that growth. McKinney credits teacher Heather Smith as someone who made a lasting impact on his life.
“She always pushed me to work harder and achieve my goals,” he said. “She believed in me even when I didn’t believe in myself.”
He also points to teammates Gavin Chavez and Ryder Evans as important influences, saying their encouragement has helped strengthen the bond within Valliant’s football program.
“They always pick me up when I make mistakes and encourage me to keep going,” McKinney said.
Away from athletics, McKinney gives back by helping his mother with the local youth association, supporting activities and events for younger children in the community.
As he begins high school, McKinney continues to carry the advice that has shaped his work ethic: do today what others are unwilling to do so tomorrow you can accomplish what they cannot. It is a mindset that continues to drive him toward whatever comes next.
