Battiest’s Olivia Estep – Track Spotlight – Presented by McCurtain County National Bank

For Olivia Estep, stepping onto the track isn’t just about competition—it’s about growth, challenge, and the pursuit of excellence. As a senior at Battiest High School, Olivia’s journey into track and field began with a spark of curiosity. “I transferred to Battiest my sophomore year and decided to join the track team,” she shared. “In the middle of the season, I got interested in pole vault and ended up getting to go to state that year.” That decision marked the beginning of her passion for pole vaulting, and it’s been her focus ever since.

Olivia draws her inspiration from those closest to her. “I decided to run because Coach Bean was my softball coach, and I enjoyed playing for him. He also coached track,” she said. “My dad and Coach Morry Sanders from Arkansas Vault Club also inspire me to work and get better.” Their influence, combined with her own determination, has fueled her growth as an athlete.

As one of the team’s senior leaders, Olivia understands the importance of setting a positive example. “I feel like I need to be a leader. I want to stay positive and try to be encouraging, especially to the underclassmen who are just starting to compete at the high school level,” she said. Her focus on mentorship and encouragement is a reflection of the supportive culture within the Battiest track team.

When it comes to goals, Olivia is aiming high. “My goal is to medal again in the pole vault at state this year. I am working towards one of the top three spots on the podium,” she said. Achieving that requires dedication, and Olivia’s training regimen is no joke. “A typical week of training is working daily at my school to get stronger and work on my form. I also travel to Arkansas Vault Club twice a week for two hours.”

The nerves that come with competing at state have been Olivia’s toughest challenge. “I overcame it by talking to my dad and Coach Bean between jumps and focusing on getting over the next bar,” she recalled.

Looking to the future, Olivia has big dreams. “I want to become a certified cosmetologist and own my own business, and I am not counting out pole vaulting in college.”
