Idabel’s Baker Hoskins – Basketball Spotlight – Presented by Smith Equipment Company

For Baker Hoskins, basketball started early. “I got started in the second grade when my dad took me to my first AAU tryouts,” he recalls. “I may have never played the game if it wasn’t for him and my mom.” Now a key player for Idabel High School, Baker reflects on how his parents’ encouragement and support shaped his journey.

This season, Baker is excited about the camaraderie within the team. “Our chemistry is good,” he says. “Our whole starting five will have been playing together for three years now.” That familiarity translates to strong teamwork on the court, something Baker values deeply.

When asked about his role on the team, Baker keeps it simple: “My role on the team is to do whatever coach Griffin asks of me.” That dedication, coupled with his work ethic, drives his consistent performance. His training routine reflects this commitment: “We usually practice after school for a couple of hours and sometimes in the morning,” he explains.

Baker acknowledges the challenges that come with the game. “The most challenging part of high school basketball is having to come to the gym at 5 in the morning to work out,” he says. Despite the early hours, his passion keeps him motivated.

Last season’s highlight for Baker was stepping onto a big stage. “My most memorable moment would be playing in the State Fair Arena,” he shares. It’s moments like these that fuel his goals for the year ahead: “My goal this year is to play confidently and go to the state tournament.”

Beyond basketball, Baker values his time with friends and family. “I like spending time with my friends and family. I don’t have much time left with them,” he says, reflecting on the importance of balancing sports and life.

Looking ahead, Baker is focused on his future, both on and off the court. “I plan to go to college for sure,” he says. “It’s not most important to me to play basketball after high school as it is to get the job that I want. But of course, I’d love to play basketball or run track after high school.”

Grateful for his journey, Baker expresses his thanks: “I thank God for everything he’s given me. I’m so blessed to be alive and healthy.” With a mindset rooted in gratitude and hard work, Baker Hoskins is making the most of his time at Idabel High School.
